Sandringham development outrage

THE Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has approved Bayside’s biggest ever development.

The decision to allow an eight-storey, multiple tower complex on Bay Rd, Sandringham, has outraged Bayside Council, residents and Sandringham state MP Murray Thompson. There were more than 1100 objections to the proposal for 453 apartments, 873 car parks, shops and a medical centre.

One of the towers, 29m at its highest, will be by far Bayside’s tallest building.

Mayor Alex del Porto said granting the permit set a concerning precedent.

“This could potentially open the floodgates to other inappropriate developments,” he said.

“This permit has been issued by VCAT regardless of the clear and emphatic wishes of the Bayside community.”

Mr Thompson said he was strongly disappointed, but as the application went to the tribunal before the state election its decision could not be reversed.

He said the new Liberal government would focus on limiting large-scale projects in inner-urban areas.

Developer Magnus Floden said he was very pleased with the result, but it didn’t surprise him because it was a good design for a liveable environment.

He said he believed residents’ concerns about an increase in traffic were unfounded because they were going to improve the road by installing traffic lights.

Work will start on the project immediately.
