BAYSIDE Council has spent just a fraction of a budgeted $100,000 to get the best legal help in a fight against a controversial Sandringham planning proposal.
In September, the council pledged to protect the community against plans for a then 11-storey tower at 220-228 Bay Rd with $100,000 of ratepayers’ money.
But at a state planning tribunal hearing held in late November, Bayside’s requested senior counsel was unable to appear.

Streets For SALE to Developers... in Bayside!

Barr Street sale gets project on the road

BAYSIDE Council has sold off a Brighton East cul-de-sac for more than $2 million.
The council has agreed to sell the Barr St block to a developer for $2.3 million.
Developer Peter Gillon has a massive planning project for the prominent site on the corner of South Rd and Nepean Highway.
In 2008 he launched a proposal for a $35 million apartment, retail, medical, office and hotel precinct on the gateway location.
It is the only corner of the busy intersection to not contain a significant development.
Bayside city strategy director Michael Top said as a single entity owned the house and adjacent land, public access was no longer required.
“The council is therefore commencing procedures to close and sell the road for incorporation into a future development on the corner of Nepean Highway and South Rd,” Mr Top said.
“The council has resolved that proceeds from the sale be set aside for the further enhancement of open space within Bayside.”
Mr Gillon said final plans would be submitted to council soon, with hopes for approval early next year.
He said the project was a four-year one, mainly with apartments and other retail facilities added on.
